In celebration of Mental Health Week 2010, Youth Services will host the second annual Elevate Youth and Family Festival on Friday 1st October at Yarra Junction skate park. The festival will run from 11am – 4pm and will feature a range of fun and free activities for community members of all ages including a BMX competition (facilitated by the YMCA) , jumping castle, rock climbing wall, face painting, petting zoo, live music performances from local artists and more.
The theme for this year’s festival is “Good Friends Help Us Bounce Back”. Young people who have been involved in the Shire’s PATS (Paying Attention to Self) and Traction programs have produced a range of postcards featuring positive messages around mental health. These postcards will be distributed free on the day.
Elevate’s primary intention is to highlight the importance of family and community connectedness in order to foster positive mental health within the community. Recent statistics suggesting that one in five Australians will experience mental illness at some point in their lives. The Elevate festival is an opportunity to engage and educate the Yarra Ranges community about mental health and eliminate the stigma associated with these issues. Local service providers and agencies will manage information stalls where community members can learn more about mental health and relevant services in the Yarra Ranges area.
